Old Canoe Creek Rd. update 3/4/20
Old Canoe Creek Road Opens Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at 10 a.m., three months after pipe collapse.
Both the south and northbound lanes on Old Canoe Creek Road are now open, returning traffic to nearly normal status after three months. The lanes will be reopened with temporary single lane closures scheduled for minor outlying work to be performed around the road.
Old Canoe Creek Road has been closed since December 18, 2019 after a large pipe collapse that destroyed a sidewalk and part of the road. The impact was significant and the scope of restoration work and safety factors forced long-term road closures that were disruptive to motorists. Since the incident, crews have been working to remove and replace the damaged nine-foot pipe culvert and rebuild the roadway; so to reestablish stormwater flow and motorist access along Old Canoe Creek Road.
The canal serves as a main part of the citywide stormwater system designed to move water runoff from roads and structures into large bodies of water, especially important during storm surges. The canal is filled with water 365 days a year and flow cannot be blocked. The culvert and roadway repair work in the canal, required the contractor to run pump systems so to continuously move water downstream and divert it around the construction site.
City engineers will continue to monitor traffic along with construction progress and to ensure that water flow returns to required levels. Osceola County Traffic will make adjustments to the surrounding roadways to account for the reopening of the Old Canoe Creek Road section.
As a reminder, for the safety of the public, please drive with caution as drivers and pedestrians adjust to the roadway. Intermittent lane closures will be limited to a single lane allowing for traffic to flow both northbound and southbound directions.
OLD CANOE CREEK ROAD TO REOPEN FIRST WEEK IN MARCH
The final phase of the Old Canoe Creek repair is nearly complete and the road is expected to be ready for reopening the first week in March. Significant progress has been made; four of the six sections of the new upgraded, aluminum stormwater pipe – nine feet in diameter – were positioned to replace the original pipe which was damaged last December. Additionally, the contractor reconnected all utility lines that had been temporarily relocated to allow for construction work to be performed under the roadway. Despite some weather issues, Cathcart Construction Company was able to install a steel shoring system so crews could work safely in the affected canal area.
Upon completion of the pipe install, soil will be placed over the pipe in compliance with State Department of Transportation standards, followed by road pavement reconstruction. Areas around the canal and pipe system will be restored to meet South Florida Water Management District requirements. This work is necessary to to ensure durability of the roadway and that stormwater flows unimpeded, most especially during tropical storm water surges.
The canal is part of the citywide stormwater system designed to move water runoff from roads and structures into large bodies of water. The canal is filled with water 365 days a year and flow cannot be blocked. In order to perform work in the canal, the contractor had to setup pump systems to continuously move water downstream and divert it around the construction site.
City engineers are on site to monitor construction progress and make sure proper water flow continues through the canal.
Due to the significant progress that has been achieved, contractors are optimistic that the roadway will reopen to vehicle traffic the first week of March, with some minor roadway and site work continuing after that.
As a reminder, for the safety of the public, the section of road that is under construction remains closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic. At this time, traffic onto Old Canoe Creek Road, between US-192 and Neptune is limited to local traffic only, but access to surrounding business continues to be open along US-192, Old Canoe Creek Road, and Neptune Road.
The City continues to monitor the roadway and Osceola County Traffic continues to monitor traffic flow with the added temporary traffic light at Neptune and Sgt. Graham Drive.
Update 2/3/20
Phase two of the repair project at Old Canoe Creek Road continues on February 3, with the arrival of the first sections of the new upgraded fully aluminum 9-foot diameter stormwater pipe to the site for rebuilding the area impacted by a pipe failure on December 18, 2019. Cathcart Construction Company continued with preparing the site to place the pipe sections. City of St. Cloud engineers are onsite to monitor the progress of the construction and ensure water flow continues through the canal.
The City of St. Cloud Streets and Stormwater crews are also onsite implementing preventative maintenance and repairs to the adjacent areas while the road is closed to through traffic.

Update 1/23/20
Phase two of the repair project at Old Canoe Creek Road began Wednesday, January 22 with crews mobilizing at the site to begin rebuilding the area impacted by a pipe failure on December 18, 2019. Cathcart Construction Company was awarded the repair contract and will be repairing the pipe, sidewalk and north and southbound lanes that were impacted.
During this phase of the restoration, the sections of the road will be closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic, which is necessary for safety reasons, as well as the scope of the construction area. At this time, traffic onto Old Canoe Creek Road, between US-192 and Neptune is limited to local traffic only, but access to surrounding business has continues to be open along US-192, Old Canoe Creek Road, and Neptune Road.
The pipe failure occurred between US 192 and Neptune Road and caused a sidewalk to collapse. When the City evaluated the scene, it was discovered that the two southbound lanes and adjacent turn lane had also been compromised. The section of the southbound and northbound lanes over the failed pipe remains closed due to the integrity of the roadway. The City continues to monitor the roadway.
Additionally, Osceola County Traffic continues to monitor traffic flow with the added temporary traffic light at Neptune and Sgt. Graham Drive.
